Artist Statement
These works are investigations into the relationship between surface and space. Each piece holds space to varying degrees and the hierarchy of space over surface shifts with changing perspectives.
The space is defined by the surfaces that form its boundaries. By creating apertures in surfaces, a conversation develops between internal and external. The surface has two sides and working with what is hidden and what is revealed creates opportunities to twist the order of visual information, suspending the work in moments of transition and contradiction.
Space is always my starting point and my most important material. It is a void that divides and unites simultaneously, initiating a series of questions that have developed into a methodology for utilising my supporting materials of plywood and paint. How can I use these materials to hold space? How can the conditions of sculpture and painting work together to challenge spatial relations within the work? If a surface can capture volume, how can that volume then be seen?
The objects in this series are made up of separate pieces that have been brought together by tension, negotiation, and cooperation. They activate and support one another to become abstract forms, united by colour, connection, and space.
